Charter Manager Alex Guy's top anchorages.

Captain-turned-Charter Manager, Alex Guy

Captain-turned-Charter Manager, Alex Guy

Before he joined Burgess as a Charter Manager, Alex Guy was a Captain in the Burgess fleet, with 14 years' sailing experience. So we grab the chance to quiz him on his 'secret' Caribbean and Bahamian anchorages...

The Bahamas

With 700-plus islands and cays to explore, The Bahamas is a popular destination for good reason. 'I love The Bahamas,' agrees Alex. 'It's a great destination for charterers. There's everything to do - the snorkelling is amazing and the beaches are picture-postcard perfect. Then there's golf ashore, if you fancy it. Really, whatever your interests - The Bahamas has it covered.'

Eleuthera Island

Eleuthera's beaches are really good - wide, sandy and private. I remember on one trip, our guests were early risers so we set up a sunrise breakfast for them. Then we had beach games afterwards. They loved it.

Compass Cay

For the classic Bahamian white, white sand and clear, clear water, you can't go wrong with Compass Cay. Nurse sharks are the big attraction - you can stroke them like house pets! It's a good central spot - just around the corner is Staniel Cay, where you can swim with pigs. Plus it's not too far from the sunken plane dive site at Norman Cay.

Caribbean

The Caribbean has long been a mecca for charterers. The combination of big blue skies, endless beaches, and warm waters make it a sure-fire success those looking for a winter-sun charter. 'You can have it all with a Caribbean itinerary,' says Guy. 'There are so many options that it comes down to the individuals on board. One thing it certain, you are going to have an amazing time.'

Palm Island, Grenadines

If you are looking for somewhere secluded and special, this is a beautiful little island. Families love it for the safe beaches and swimming. Here you can find the classic Caribbean without jostling for anchorage space.

Virgin Gorda, BVIs

Virgin Gorda is always a fantastic spot. There are lots of small islands to hop between, plus open water for deep sea fishing. The beaches are famous for rock pools - and for bars!

Pitons Bay, St Lucia

The twin volcanic Pitons are really dramatic. As you sail into the bay they rise up in front of you - and in the mornings the peaks catch the clouds. The beaches are quiet and secluded, plus there's a resort if you want it. Charterers like to go ashore and hike up the mountains - the views are worth it.

Gouverneur Beach, St Barth

Of course I have to mention St Barth! It's a favourite with charterers. My tip is to anchor off Gouverneur Beach - it's got everything you want in a Caribbean beach, even a marine reserve nearby. Plus it's just around the corner from Gustavia Marina, for the night life!
