A 42m (137.8ft) go-anywhere expedition yacht with tri-deck accommodation, THE BIG BLUE was built in 2009 by Turkish shipyard Troy Marine to Bureau Veritas classification, with in-house exterior design and naval architecture. Her strongly built steel hull was tank tested prior to construction and optimised for long range ocean voyaging in all weathers. Key hull features include a full displacement underwater shape with a narrow entry, round bilge and bulbous bow.
She had a major refit in 2013 and was repainted in 2015. Extensive maintenance and five-year Bureau Veritas survey were completed in 2016.
She is spacious up top with a sun deck forward and dual purpose boat deck and helipad aft. The sun deck has a jacuzzi and sunpads forward, lounge seating, sit-up bar and BBQ amidships. Further aft is a knuckle boom crane and ample space to stow two tenders as well as a helicopter. Below this is a large, shaded and sheltered bridge deck aft with open air dining and lounge seating. The main deck aft cockpit is set up for al fresco dining and sunbathing with a huge sunpad and lounge seating. She has full walkaround decks on main, bridge and sun decks with a Portuguese bridge and walkway to the foredeck. On the swim platform is a hydraulic bathing platform for ease of access to the water.
The clean, contemporary interior design scheme by Luiz de Basto is smart and practical for long range family cruising. She has 399GT of interior volume on three decks. The sky lounge has lounge seating aft, a glass-walled office for the owner and an area configured as a classroom with a dayheads adjacent.
Down on the main deck, the main saloon is open plan with lounge and games areas aft, formal dining room and bar amidships. Forward to port is a well-equipped galley with steps leading down to the crew’s quarters below.
The owner’s cabin is a full beam suite forward on the main deck with a private foyer, very large walk in wardrobe, king sized bed on the centreline with sofas on both sides, vanity desk and his and hers bathrooms. Down below, there’s a full beam VIP suite aft, which converts to a media/games lounge, plus a double and two twin guest cabins. The crew area comprises three cabins with bunk beds and a mess room.
