National Mask and Warwagira Festival
The National Mask and Warwagira Festival is a vibrant celebration that showcases the unique and diverse mask cultures of East New Britain Province. Held as a cultural tribute to the region’s Tolai, Baining, and Pomio peoples, the festival offers a rare opportunity to witness centuries-old traditions brought vividly to life.
The first day begins with the dramatic ‘Kinavai’ ceremony at dawn, as the Tolai ‘Tubuans’ and ‘Duk-Duks’ arrive by canoe to signify the spiritual opening of the festival. Shell money exchanges follow, a powerful symbol of Tolai heritage and connection. As night falls, visitors journey into the mountains to experience the extraordinary fire dances of the Baining people – an awe-inspiring ritual where masked men leap through towering flames, captivating all who witness it.
