Summer in the Western Mediterranean

This month, Charter Director Neil Hornsby focuses on three of the most popular western Mediterranean charter destinations.

French & Italian Riviera

Cruising the French & Italian Riviera offers something for everyone: mix with the jet-set along the Côte d’Azur or relax among unspoilt views, enjoying wonderful local specialities.

Two of my favourite anchorages are on this stretch of coast. The deep water bay at Villefranche is ideal for swimming and watersports with a relaxed waterfront ambiance. For a more sophisticated anchorage, try Saint-Jean–Cap-Ferrat. Stop off in Cannes for global brands and golf, en route to Saint-Tropez, where Pampelonne Beach tops the Riviera A-list of beaches.

For the Italian Riviera, turn left instead of right out of Monte Carlo, or start your cruise at the new port in Genoa and head for Portofino, a favourite for charterers with its famous Hotel Splendido and Da Puny restaurant.

Amalfi

Combine the magical atmosphere of Capri with the breathtaking Amalfi Coast for the complete charter experience. Positano became a jet-set resort in the 1950’s and has good choices for dining as well as excellent boutiques.

My favourite anchorage is on Ponza - one of the most beautiful islands in the entire Mediterranean.

The town is a completely authentic, unpretentious Italian port, a great place to sit at a waterfront café and watch the world go by. The water is spectacularly blue and a boat ride to explore the grottoes in a tender is a treat.

Allow a week or 10 days to explore, but we can also organise longer charters to include the magical Lipari (Aeolian) Islands to the south and on down to Sicily.

Sardinia & Corsica

Sardinia bedazzles with luxury shopping and high-class restaurants, in contrast with the rugged landscapes and medieval towns of Corsica. It makes perfect sense to combine the two in one charter!

In Sardinia, yachts gravitate to the Costa Smeralda in the north-east, with Porto Cervo at its heart. The marina hosts designer boutiques from Armani to Versace, and the cafés on the main square are perfect for people-watching. Many superyachts spend the day at anchor in Cala di Volpe, their tenders buzzing ashore to the famous Hotel Cala di Volpe for lunch.

The beautiful Maddalena Islands are stunning at sunset, especially Isola Caprera. From here it’s a short cruise to mountainous Corsica. Don’t miss Bonifacio – one of the most spectacular natural harbours in the world. Other places to visit include Porto-Vecchio, a wide, blue bay with a lively town centre and burgeoning nightlife. On the west coast, Girolata is quaint, with turquoise water perfect for watersports, while Calvi in the north offers a taste of traditional Corsican culture and cuisine.
