The McMullen & Wing Treble

McMullen & Wing has made a name for itself through technical and engineering excellence, delivering a number of mould-breaking yachts, including perhaps most famously the multi-award-winning explorer BIG FISH.

It’s no surprise therefore that the New Zealand-based shipyard has taken a unique approach to their next project. McMullen & Wing approached three world-renowned (and very different) yacht designers to inject their distinct creative flare into a range of exciting concepts based on the same brief: an adventurous vessel around the 50m mark with all the capabilities of a world-class explorer plus the style and comfort expected on a luxury yacht.

Here is a spotlight on three of the creations from Gregory C Marshall Naval Architects, H2 Yacht Design and Vripack, which are ready to inspire a future owner to add their own touches and truly customise their future new build project.

50m DIAMOND >>
This newly penned 50m concept is an evolution of Greg Marshall’s current creations from the Diamond series, 45m BIG FISH and custom-built 50m YN1016, the latter of which is due to be launched next year. Although only 5m longer than the 499GT BIG FISH, the layout has been reconsidered and maximised to offer an owner 50 per cent more volume at 750GT. The distinctive lines with angular form and vast windows allow the views of the ever-changing landscape to fill the interior. With accommodation for 12 guests and up to 13 crew, the current concept specification has a range of 5,000nm and a draft of 2.7m (8.9ft). [more info link]

51m FLOW >>

The most visually unconventional of the three concepts, Vripack has offered a 51m, 780GT design that is true to character of the innovative Dutch team that has over 7,000 hulls under its belt. Questioning the function and form of every detail, the Flow concept makes clever use of materials to open up the living space and invite in the exotic surroundings. The glass Beach House offers spectacular views and protection from the elements, whether sub-zero or sub-tropical. The Family Deck provides a space for recreation, exercise and observation, while the extended gullwing lookouts on the main deck mean guests can connect with the ocean in new and exciting ways. Flow is able to accommodate up to 10 guests and 10 crew, and a range of 5,700nm with just 3.1m (10.2ft) of draft in the current concept design and specification.

52m BLADE >>
A true chameleon of the ocean, the 52m Blade concept from H2 Yacht Design is as much at home stern-to on the docks of St Tropez as it is at anchor in the stunning lagoons of the Solomon Islands. The effortless flow when transitioning between reception areas and the feeling of space provided by the aft deck’s near-180-degree views offer the sense of a large, open plan penthouse. It combines contemporary design and wide-open spaces with the technical hallmark of McMullen & Wing, providing the significant cruising range and robust engineering needed for a real explorer.
