Burgess 50: Five yachts that defined an era

Published 17 九月 2025

As part of Burgess’ 50 year celebrations, we are taking a deep dive into our history, highlighting some of the most influential yachts that helped shape not just Burgess but the yachting industry as whole. From the first yacht we ever sold to vessels featured on critically acclaimed TV shows and groundbreaking innovations, these yachts represent the pinnacle of luxury and craftsmanship.

The deal that launched 50 years of excellence: MARQUES

The sale of the historic barque MARQUES by Nigel Burgess in 1975 marked the company’s first milestone and the beginning of its rise to global yachting leadership. Built in Valencia in 1917 as a polacca-rigged brig (a type of ship with a mix of triangular and square sails) carrying fruit from the Canary Islands, MARQUES survived wartime damage, later appeared on film and television, and competed in the celebrated Tall Ships’ Races.

Her story ended tragically in 1984 when a rogue wave sank her off Nova Scotia, but her legacy endures as the yacht that launched Burgess’ journey – embodying the spirit of adventure and commitment to exceptional yachts and experiences that define the company to this day.

A giant of the seas: AL MIRQAB

When Burgess facilitated the sale of AL MIRQAB – then known as PROJECT MAY – it wasn’t just another transaction; it was the orchestration of a deal that would cement itself in superyacht history. At 133.2m (436.4ft), this Kusch Yachts-built titan stands as one of the largest yachts ever sold by Burgess and remains one of the top 25 largest yachts currently afloat.

'PROJECT MAY was not only sold by Burgess, but the completed design and construction of the yacht was supervised and verified by Burgess Technical Services. At the time PROJECT MAY was contracted, she was one of the largest new build custom yacht projects. We oversaw the development of the technical specification and general arrangement, and negotiated the construction agreement. This cemented Burgess and Burgess Technical Services as the most experienced yachting team focused on custom large yacht builds and transactions.'

The yacht that stole the spotlight: TITANIA

If a yacht makes an appearance in The Crown, you can be sure it’s worthy of royalty. Featured in the sixth and final season of Netflix’s critically acclaimed series, TITANIA embodies regal grandeur with seven cabins, a beach club that transforms into a nightclub, and a crew dedicated to delivering a truly royal experience.

Designed to impress, this 73m superyacht has welcomed British royals on screen and offers every amenity of a floating resort – waterslides, spa, cinema, and more – making it the ultimate private yacht charter for families, close-knit entourages, or A-listers seeking refined indulgence with pedigree.

Designed to go further: PLANET NINE

Regarded as one of the world’s foremost explorer yachts, the ice-classed PLANET NINE is as tough as she is stylish – and seriously cool, having even appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. Built for adventure anywhere in the world, she features a fully certified helipad for an MD600 helicopter, opening up experiences from heli-skiing to a direct flight to the finest spas and restaurants. The helipad area can also be transformed into a games deck for ball sports, adding an active touch to your voyages.

Although engineered for exploration, PLANET NINE doesn’t compromise on luxury. Her interior includes a forward observation lounge with panoramic views, a state-of-the-art spa, and a dedicated owner’s deck – every space designed for comfort, style, and unforgettable moments at sea.

The yacht ahead of its time: BRAVO EUGENIA

BRAVO EUGENIA sets a new benchmark in yacht innovation. This 109m (358ft) superyacht, delivered by Oceanco in 2018, is a testament to cutting-edge engineering and sustainable luxury. At her heart is a hybrid propulsion system with PTO/PTI capabilities, allowing the engines to either generate electricity or provide additional thrust when needed. This reduces fuel consumption, lowers emissions, and optimises engine performance.

A carefully sized battery bank supports ‘peak shaving’ – stepping in to supply extra power when demand suddenly spikes. This keeps the engines running at their most efficient level, reduces noise and vibration, and even allows for periods of near-silent, emission-free cruising. Waste heat recovery from the generators is reused for air conditioning and hot water, further improving efficiency.

BRAVO EUGENIA's innovative features even earned her the Yacht Club de Monaco’s first Belle Classe Explorer Award for Technology and Innovation, underscoring her status as a leader in sustainable luxury yachting.
