Build or buy

Considering yacht ownership? Whether you want to commission a bespoke build, personalise a semi-custom model, or step aboard an existing yacht immediately, we take a look at which option is right for you and spotlight the best yachts available.
The big question
The superyacht market offers multiple routes to ownership, but if you want a yacht tailored to your vision, you have two clear choices:
- Commissioning a fully custom build – the ultimate in bespoke design
- Choosing a semi-custom yacht – a proven platform with room for personalisation
'There are excellent opportunities in the new build market right now. Many established shipyards are shifting toward semi-custom builds, which offer shorter delivery times, proven designs, and more competitive pricing compared to full custom yachts. Whether in Italy, Turkey, or Northern Europe, shipyards are expanding their semi-custom offerings, presenting endless possibilities wherever you choose to build.
'For owners seeking a fully custom yacht, many shipyards can accommodate. Emerging technologies, environmentally conscious designs, and a focus on yacht efficiency are driving both semi-custom and custom yachts into a new era of design and construction. It’s an exciting time for new yacht construction.' Sean Bianchi, Partner, Head of Burgess Technical Services, Naval Architect
For those who want a yacht sooner, there are also in-build yachts for sale, and of course, exceptional pre-owned yachts ready to go.
We asked Burgess’ brokers and new build experts what’s hot on the market right now – here’s what they had to say.
Building a yacht: custom vs semi-custom
So, you’ve decided you want to build a yacht. Now what? Well, there are two main routes to go down: fully custom or semi-custom.
'Custom builds are typically aligned with large yachts over 55m (180ft), where clients are committed to a project that suits their personal lifestyle, with longer design and construction timelines. However, when complete customisation isn’t a necessity, semi-custom yachts offer significant advantages. These pre-engineered yachts allow construction to begin sooner by reducing design and engineering time, with many shipyards even starting projects on speculation for quicker delivery.
'While owners may need to compromise on some aspects like exterior design or interior layout, the proven platform, shorter lead times, and more competitive pricing make it an appealing option. As a result, many shipyards are now focusing more on semi-custom offerings, reflecting current owner demands.' Sean Bianchi, Partner, Head of Burgess Technical Services, Naval Architect
Fully custom
However, this level of customisation comes with a longer build time, typically ranging from three to five years. It also requires close involvement throughout the design and construction process, working closely with naval architects, designers, and shipyards to bring your vision to life. For those willing to invest the time and effort, the reward is a one-of-a-kind yacht built without compromise.
Semi-custom
Going down the semi-custom route offers a proven hull and engineering package, with customisable interiors and some layout flexibility. As Sales Broker Thibault Roi explains, ‘a semi-custom yacht is defined by the fact that the construction is based on a platform where most of the engineering, hull, and superstructure design will be the same from one hull to the next, while also offering an element of personalisation. Clients can therefore rely on a proven technical platform, with the flexibility to customise their yachts extensively, from the interior design, exterior design and amenities to a completely different layout and features.’
Pros and cons
Building a semi-custom yacht offers a lot of benefits. It’s an excellent choice for any buyer as it’s the perfect balance between designing a yacht that resembles you while being based on a tried-and-tested model.
- A shorter build time: Whether you choose to build a new one from scratch or buy one already in construction, since the engineering phase has already been completed, the delivery (subject to yard availability) will be faster.
- Cost-efficiency, reputation, and resale value: Generally, semi-custom yachts are more affordable as the design and engineering costs will be spread by the yard. Unless you purchase the first hull, you will also be able to inspect and review the quality of the series you are interested in to make the right choices, with a clearer expectation on her future resale value.
- Large inventory: Most semi-custom yachts will measure between 30m to 55m, and you will have access to an impressive range of options, from fast and sporty vessels to explorer units. It’s also a popular segment of both the charter and second-hand markets, thus representing a smart and controlled financial investment.
Looking at the cons, while few and far between, the main consideration is flexibility. Structural elements are largely set in stone and cannot be altered, so bear this in mind if there is a particular feature that is a ‘must’ for your yacht.
Latest trends
We spoke to two of our brokers who weighed in on what’s popular in both markets and why.
‘A seamless connection between indoor and outdoor areas remains extremely important in both markets, with an emphasis on direct access to water – whether a large pool, the sea, or in most cases both. Where beach clubs were once a must have, we’re now seeing higher levels of interest in more informal ‘beach-house’ type spaces on the main deck level, with floor-to-ceiling windows, large opening doors, and huge aft terraces leading down to the sea.’ Tim Vickers, Senior Sales Broker
‘The success of the Benetti Oasis range is a perfect example of the beach club trend, which can also be seen on the Baglietto DOM133 or the latest and redesigned 50M STEEL from Heesen.'Thibault Roi, Sales Broker
‘Clients wanting volume and comfort also remains one of the most important features on motor yachts between 30-55m. Tri-deck, offering as many cabins as possible, and large deck spaces are always popular choices. The Ferretti Custom Line Navetta 42, the Mangusta Oceano series, or the relatively new Conrad C144S models are brilliant examples in this category.' Thibault Roi, Sales Broker
‘Environmental responsibility has become a priority for many of our clients, leading to discussions about eco-friendly features such as hybrid and electric propulsion systems, solar power integration, and the use of sustainable materials.’ Tim Vickers, Senior Sales Broker

In-build yachts for sale: a fast-track option
For those who want a new yacht without the full build process, there are custom and semi-custom yachts already in build and available for purchase. These projects allow for some level of personalisation, depending at which point you join the project, but delivery is much faster than commissioning from scratch.
In-build yachts for sale
We spoke to Partner and Sales Broker Crispin Baynes to get his pick of the most exciting in-build yachts currently for sale.
‘Right now, the variety of options available to clients looking to purchase a new build is exceptional. Buying afloat: the ready-to-go alternative
Understandably, not everyone wants to wait years to step on board their yacht, and there are some outstanding yachts already on the water that offer immediate ownership. Most of these yachts are pre-owned, but there are yachts on the sales market that have just been delivered, offering something for every type of client and to suit every budget. Pre-owned yachts can provide excellent value, with the potential to refit to make it your own.
‘Buying on the brokerage market certainly represents advantages such as the instant availability of the yacht and a more cost-effective option than a new build vessel. But to make sure you consider the best opportunities and select the right yacht for you, the assistance and guidance of a sales broker is paramount.’ Stephanie Bosi, Sales Broker
