The Bahamas
Soft, warm sand and crystal-clear water are a Bahamian signature
Renowned for its clear, shallow and outrageously warm waters, The Bahamas is understandably a yachting hot spot. Located within the Lucayan Archipelago of the West Indies in the Atlantic, it comprises 16 major islands stretched across 100,000 square miles of the world's clearest ocean. Daily activities greatly vary, from swimming with wild pigs and white sandy beach strolls to hopping between palm-fringed islands or dining on rum-infused Creole creations.
Best location for stand-up paddle boarding
Paddleboarding is a great way to explore while working on your core
Stand-up paddle boarding is a popular pastime in the Caribbean made more addictive in recent years by the advent of paddleboard yoga. The art of pulling off downward-facing dog while bobbing about on waves helps to increase balance, coordination and proprioception (the sense of self-movement and body position). Combining with strength and toning associated with conventional yoga and the fun of paddleboarding, it’s a hit on the wellness yachting scene.
Samaria Gorge, Crete
It's a challenging hike but hugely rewarding
Situated in the National park of Samaria in the White Mountains in West Crete, the Samaria Gorge is a dramatic V-shaped valley that lures visitors from far and wide. It is one of the longest gorges in Europe and starts at an altitude of 1,230m. Typically receiving over 2,000 hikers a day during peak season, it is still possible to have the gorge virtually to yourself if tackled later in the day when you’ll be walking against the tide.
Best location for hiking
This entire gorge, 16km in length, was carved out over millennia by the river
Hiking the Samaria Gorge is no mean feat. The 16km journey takes the brave all the way down to the shores of the Libyan Sea in Agia Roumeli, with a lengthy 13km walk that laces through the Samaria National Park. Look out for a narrow passage near the end of the gorge, known to the locals as ‘Portes’, meaning doors or gates. It’s an arduous hike, but a great way to sweat off any indulgences enjoyed during on board mealtimes.
Chiang Mai, Thailand
The sights, sounds and scents of Chiang Mai's night market are unforgettable
Chiang Mai is the largest city in mountainous northern Thailand. The historic Old City of Chiang Mai still retains vestiges of walls and moats, encircled by the newer, modern counterpart that has manifested in a web of highways. An intimate stroll through the ancient backstreets provides a window onto a distinctly Thai setting. The surrounding area gives way to verdant countryside and humid rainforests, where waterfalls, fresh produce markets and elephant sanctuaries abound.
Best location for yoga
Whatever philosophy of yoga you follow, you'll find a devotee here
Drawing wellness warriors from around the globe, the city of Chiang Mai is a hot hub of yoga. Encompassing Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Kundalini, Yin, restorative, tantric and aerial, the land that brought the world massage and Massaman is the best place on Earth to ‘find your centre’. A plethora of roving international yoga teachers make private classes aboard the yacht a simple request, though attending sessions at a shore-based studio will fully immerse you in the authentic cultural experience.
St Lucia, Caribbean
Saint Lucia captures the spirit of wellness with its beaches, rainforest, thermal spring and spas aplenty
The volcanic island of St Lucia is home to beaches, reefs and fishing villages, framed by mountainous backdrops and cascading waterfalls. Its laidback island vibe sets the tone for casual living, where time ceases to exist and mother nature’s beauty takes centre stage. Horseback riding and ziplining entertain on land. At sea, the chance to encounter whales, manatees and sea turtle delights.
Best location for wellness retreats
Hiking the nature trails around the Pitons is a great way to get up-close to the island's wildlife
The mighty Pitons are the dominant icon for the Caribbean island of St Lucia, but while a spectacular hike is always on the menu, it’s the country’s myriad wellness retreats that call to weary wanderers. From full-body massages that take in exotic scents and spices to seawater hydrotherapy, the opportunity to dive head-first into wellness rehabilitation is here for the taking.
