It is believed that the Games originated in the 11th century when King Malcolm III wanted a fleet-footed messenger and chose one by holding a race to the top of Craig Choinnich, near Braemar. Strength was the next test and then music and dancing were added to entertain the kings, queens and clan chiefs. The events enjoy royal patronage and they continue to evolve. The latest competition, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, is haggis hurling.
