Aidy Smith's spring wine picks - sweet wines

Published 19 June 2020

We’ve all been there – big meal, great dessert and in need of just one more thing to complete the evening. Well, look no further.

I just couldn’t finish this list without adding just a few sweet treats to hit that spot. Champagne picks here, white here, rosé here and red wines here.

KOPKE COLHEITA 1979 PORT (PORTUGAL)

Average Price €100

Who doesn’t like a good port? Now let’s take a port from 1979 produced by the oldest port house, Kopke. They’ve been making the stuff since 1638, so you’d expect it to be great, and well, it is. Dried figs, plums and dark chocolate erupt from the glass with a sticky sweet apricot jam, dried prunes and a distinct nuttiness on the palate. Honestly, it just doesn’t get much better than this.

AMADEUS TOKAJI (HUNGARY)

Average Price €47

As if you weren’t sweet enough already… Spring is the perfect time to indulge in some Hungarian Tokaji. Beautiful floral sweetness packed full of orange blossom and honeyed almonds. Amadeus is produced from serenaded grapes, grown in vineyards where classical music is played around the clock, every single day.

MAJELLA SPARKLING SHIRAZ 2008 (AUSTRALIA)

Average Price €23

Ever had a sparkling shiraz before? No? Well, you should. It’s not often you get a sparkling red wine with so much age, so this really is a treat. Stunningly rich and vibrant, dark black cherries jump out of the glass alongside velvety tannins, brown sugar, and… did I mention it’s a sparkling red?
