Burgess and Blue Marine Foundation in 2025
Published 13 February 2026
We reflect on another impactful year in partnership with Blue Marine Foundation and look ahead to continued successes in 2026.
The AMORGORAMA project brings together local authorities, NGOs, scientists, fishers, and EU institutions to protect the health of Greek seas while supporting local livelihoods. Burgess has supported Blue Marine Foundation’s work on the island of Amorgos for the past three years, contributing over GBP 121,000 (EUR 128,500/USD 152,500) in just 2025 alone – a combination of Burgess funding and generous client donations.
In 2025, these funds helped complete the final stage of Posidonia (seagrass) mapping in the Erimitis Peninsula and, most importantly, supported pioneering community-led protection measures on Amorgos, which were officially ratified into law.
2025 project milestones
August 2025: A landmark Presidential Decree established four new fishing-protected areas around Amorgos.
The Amorgos Model was introduced, featuring three permanent no-take zones and an island-wide seasonal fishing closure.
The Greek Prime Minister highlighted the project at the UN Conference as a leading example for community-led marine conservation, announcing plans for two new National Marine Parks for the Southern Cyclades and Ionian Sea.
