SCOTT FREE - touched by genius

Published 11 February 2022

SCOTT FREE is undergoing an eight month, multi-million Euro refit - and the finishing touch is a parting gift from the late Virgil Abloh, after he fell in love with the yacht on a family charter

Since late 2021, SCOTT FREE has been in Germany undergoing a comprehensive refit and rename. Just before the yacht went to the shipyard, US fashion giant and entrepreneur Virgil Abloh chartered her for a family holiday. He was blown away by the yacht and charter holiday experience, so when he discovered that the owner was about to embark on this project, he eagerly offered to get involved.

Although he lived his career in the spotlight, Abloh was private about his personal life, which is why it is so poignant that the two overlapped in his involvement of SCOTT FREE's rename. To enjoy some downtime with his family last summer, he chartered the 60m (196.9ft) Abeking & Rasmussen yacht, then called ELYSIAN, through Burgess.

Abloh and his family loved the yacht, the charter experience and crew for giving them such a special holiday. So, when Abloh heard the yacht was about to be renamed from ELYSIAN to SCOTT FREE, he promptly offered to create a logo for the owner as a gift.

Abloh’s logo adds his creative brilliance to SCOTT FREE’s already impressive refit. The yacht owner has commissioned new interiors designed by Yacht Next, including new artwork, upgrade of the AV/IT systems and reconfiguring the layout to create a beauty and massage room. The exterior refit is no less comprehensive - including the creation of a sea-level beach club and doubling the size of the foredeck seating area, plus a hull repaint.

In their design statement, Yacht Next say, ‘We began with the sky lounge refit, it was crucial for us to have a lounge area that is ultra-comfortable, stylish and timeless. We chose Minotti furniture – for Italian-style luxury.’ This mantra of luxury, comfort and style has been applied to the design throughout the living spaces.

Tragically, Abloh has since died on 28 November 2021, at the age of just 41. Dubbed the ‘Karl Lagerfeld for Millennials’, he was artistic director of menswear at Louis Vuitton - the first African American to head a French fashion house – and had taken on broader creative responsibilities across the LVMH brand. He was also the CEO of the Milan-based label Off-White, a fashion house he founded in 2013.

Abloh’s spontaneous generosity was one of his last creative acts. The yacht owner and crew remember him with heartfelt affection as a true gentleman, and feel honoured to have part of his legacy live on in SCOTT FREE.

When the yacht debuts her new look in April 2022 she will be available to charter in Norway, and then the West Mediterranean. To experience SCOTT FREE for yourself, the yacht owner has this message: 'Come and enjoy what I enjoy.'
