On board FORTITUDE 1 with Captain David

Published 11 février 2026

Ahead of their summer cruising the Mediterranean, we spoke to FORTITUDE 1’s captain, David Piardi, about his favourite hidden gems and how he and his crew are committed to making this your best ever charter.

Can you tell us a little about your background as a charter captain and the regions you’ve most enjoyed working in so far?

Over the last 25 years I have worked almost exclusively on charter yachts. I find this side of the industry the most enjoyable because I truly love creating unforgettable experiences for our guests. I especially enjoy cruising in the Mediterranean; there are so many beautiful regions to discover, and exploring them by yacht is the best way to experience it all.

What do you enjoy most about charter operations and creating exceptional guest experiences?

I really enjoy collaborating with the crew to create memorable moments for our guests. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them having a fantastic time on board and knowing that we’re helping to shape a special holiday they’ll always remember.

How would you describe the crew culture on board, and how do you and the crew go above and beyond to create unforgettable moments for guests?

We’re a dynamic and energetic crew, and we always aim to create a relaxed yet fun atmosphere on board. Everyone excels in their role – both interior and deck teams – and we consistently go the extra mile to ensure our guests feel welcomed, looked after, and entertained.

FORTITUDE 1 will be cruising the East Mediterranean and Adriatic this summer – what makes cruising here so special for guests?

The Greek and Adriatic Islands offer some of the most beautiful cruising grounds with incredibly pristine waters. Within these regions, the diversity of landscapes keeps every day varied and exciting. Guests can enjoy everything from dramatic cliffs to peaceful coves – perfect for watersports or simply relaxing somewhere picturesque and private.

Can you share a few of your favourite hidden gems in this region that you’d recommend to charter guests?

Lefkada – often called ‘the Caribbean of Greece’ – is a great starting point for a Greek charter, and it's famous for its dramatic white cliffs. Nearby is Meganisi, ideal for a day spent hiking its green hills or snorkelling in the sea caves.

In Croatia, the Kornati Islands National Park is a must‑visit. With over 80 islands, islets, and reefs, it’s one of the most stunning wilderness areas with extraordinarily clear water.

In the Aegean, Serifos is an unspoilt gem favoured by Athenians – always a good sign. Hydra is also special, where the only transport is on foot, by water taxi, or by donkey. And of course Mykonos and Santorini, though busier, remain popular for good reason, offering vibrant excellent restaurants and nightlife.

How do you tailor itineraries to balance iconic destinations with quieter, lesser-known spots?

Every itinerary is tailored precisely to the guests’ wishes and expectations. Before each charter we discuss what kind of experience they want, and we continue adjusting throughout the trip to make sure the plan is working for them. While we follow an itinerary, we always stay flexible and modify plans when needed – whether due to weather or simply a change in preference.

If you could plan the perfect week-long itinerary in the East Mediterranean/Adriatic this summer, what would it look like?

It really depends on what the guests are looking for – whether it’s a celebration or a relaxing family holiday. Typically, mornings include a gentle cruise to a new spot while guests unwind on board. We then anchor for a delicious lunch prepared by the chef, created to guests' preferences. Afternoons are ideal for watersports and exploring hidden coves, and in the evenings we tender ashore so guests can enjoy the local nightlife.

How do you typically approach preparing for a new cruising region?

Even though I know the region well, I’m always researching the latest hotspots and hidden gems. I gather information from fellow captains, local agents, friends who regularly cruise these areas, and of course travel guides.
