Discovering the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters

The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters takes place every year in early April.

There are few better ways to begin a Mediterranean yacht charter than by attending the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters. It is the first of three ATP Masters 1000 tournaments of the clay season and is widely regarded as the launch event of the summer on the French Riviera.

The event is a favourite due to its magnificent location, the Monte-Carlo Country Club, and long tradition of champions. It’s perfectly placed for a yacht rental that begins or ends in the jewel-like Principality and yachting hub that is Monaco.

History

The historic clay-court ATP Masters 1000 event, which celebrated its 100 anniversary in 2006, has crowned a host of icon champions in its history. Founded in 1896 as the Monte-Carlo International, the annual tennis tournament for male professional players is held in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, and forms part of the nine ATP Tour Masters 1000 events on the ATP tour. It was a combined men's and women's tournament until 1982 when the women's championships ceased.

Notable Matches: Highlights from the tournament history

In 2023, 26-year-old Andrey Rublev captured his maiden Masters 1000 title, clawing past Holger Rune in three sets in the title match. Stefanos Tsitsipas and Fabio Fognini have also thrilled fans in recent years with their mesmerising wins. But it is Rafael Nadal, the ‘king of clay’, who holds the record for the most men’s singles titles, entering the history books in 2018 with his 11 Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters wins.

When is the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters 2024?

Taking place in 2024 from 6 to 14 April on the legendary clay courts of the Monte-Carlo Country Club and presided over by Mlle Mélanie-Antoinette de Massy, this year’s Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters promises to be an exhilarating event.

Where is the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters?

The Monte-Carlo Country Club is affiliated to two tennis federations — Monegasque and French. It’s located in the commune of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, and is home to both the ATP Tour's Monte-Carlo Masters tournament and the Monte-Carlo Tennis Academy. One of the best perks about this location is the incredible yawning views of the yacht-dotted horizon that serve as a captivating backdrop to the clay courts.

They’re joined by current world number three, Carlos Alcaraz, the highest-ranked Italian tennis player in history, Jannik Sinner, and 2020 Olympic gold medallist, Alexander Zverev.

Monaco and France

Monaco has glitz and glam in spades, with its pastel-coloured buildings, litany of supercars, and the shimmering Mediterranean Sea, all of which make the microstate a noteworthy stop on any itinerary. A superyacht charter in Monaco brings world renowned performances at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Michelin-starred dining at Alain Ducasse’s Le Louis XV, and a wash of fashion designers along the Avenue des Beaux-Arts.

Explore the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

Unwind and enjoy the Mediterranean coastline

The hardest part of planning a Mediterranean itinerary is fitting everything in. The golden beaches, incredible eateries and inviting warm waters make it a yachting haven, but there are plenty of shoreside attractions worth stopping off for, too. The Saint-Michel Church is a minor basilica located in the heart of the historic centre of Menton. Approached on foot in the town’s pedestrian area, it’s just a stone’s throw from Château de Roquebrune. Built in the 10 century, the Château was originally the dungeon of a fortress encompassing the entire village, but today, it’s the gateway to breath-taking views that stretch across the Riviera.

Enjoy the area’s history

Architecture buffs will enjoy the glorious Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, one of the most iconic properties in the area. It’s neighboured by the elegant Belle-Époque-style Hôtel Hermitage and the Saint Nicholas Cathedral, where Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace married. Of course, one of the most notable attractions is the Palais Princier de Monaco, the official residence of the ruling monarch, which dates to 1191.
