The sky's greatest spectacles, seen from sea

Published 10 July 2026

The remainder of 2026 promises a series of remarkable celestial events, from a total solar eclipse and one of the year's most spectacular meteor showers to a festive supermoon and the elusive Northern Lights.

For those seeking a charter beyond the ordinary, these natural phenomena provide the perfect reason to travel. Together with our partners at JORO and their network of world-class specialists, we can create extraordinary experiences that transform a yacht charter into something truly unforgettable.

12 august

Solar eclipse

On 12 August 2026, a solar eclipse will be visible across parts of Europe and the north Atlantic. In Europe, Spain will experience the largest area of totality, offering favourable viewing conditions as the eclipse crosses the country from west to east and continues over the Balearic Islands. This will be the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain since 1905, and the first of three solar eclipses visible from the country between 2026 and 2028.

Using JORO’s network of specialists, we can arrange for a sound practitioner to join your charter. As the moon begins its journey across the sun, your group will drift out on paddleboards beneath the open sky while the practitioner follows alongside in a kayak, playing a series of calming tones from crystal singing bowls. As daylight fades and the eclipse reaches its peak, time seems to slow, creating a moment of complete stillness between sea and sky.

Geminids meteor shower

A dark night sky, with streaks of brilliant colour and fireballs flashing overhead. The Geminids meteor shower is one of the brightest, most reliable, and prolific meteor showers of the year, frequently producing up to 120 meteors per hour under ideal conditions. The Geminids can be seen in mid-December in the Northern Hemisphere (so ideal for Caribbean and Bahamas winter charters) with the active period occurring between 4–20 December, and the shower peaking overnight on 13–14 December.

As darkness falls, a private astronomer joins you on deck for an evening beneath some of the clearest skies on Earth. Using high-powered telescopes and expert guidance, you'll learn to identify constellations, planets and deep-space objects before witnessing the Geminids streak across the sky. The experience can also include astrophotography tuition, allowing you to capture the night sky long after the shower has passed.

Christmas Eve supermoon

Do something different this Christmas and spend it on board a yacht witnessing a rare supermoon. Visible on Christmas Eve, this visually striking spectacle occurs when the traditional December ‘Cold Moon’ – the final full moon of the year – reaches the closest point to Earth in its orbit. This alignment causes the moon to appear both larger and brighter than a normal full moon.

The most dramatic view happens at moonrise, just after sunset on the eastern horizon. And, as the moon climbs higher during the night, you can spot the constellations Orion, Jupiter, and Mars accompanying it in the night sky.

Mark Christmas Eve with a moonlit celebration unlike any other. As the supermoon rises over the horizon, enjoy an elegant dinner on deck before the evening unfolds into a white-tie masquerade beneath the glow of the brightest full moon of the festive season.

The Northern Lights

While the aurora is best viewed ashore, it pairs perfectly with a Northern European yacht itinerary. Extend your charter with a bespoke Arctic adventure designed by Burgess | JORO.

‘Seeing the Northern Lights is the ultimate bucket-list celestial experience, and there is no substitute for being in the right place at the right time. That’s why we focus on the far north, partnering with exceptional private lodges in Finland, Svalbard, Iceland and Arctic Canada that offer front-row seats to the aurora.

‘These are far more than just Northern Lights trips Think dog sledding across frozen landscapes, ice driving, Arctic fishing, photography expeditions and remarkable dining experiences in some of the world’s most remote settings.

‘Having just returned from scouting a lodge in Svalbard, I can say with confidence that the journey is as memorable as the destination itself. Watching reindeer graze outside my window before enjoying a seven-course Arctic tasting menu was unforgettable. Add the possibility of seeing the aurora dance overhead, and you have one of the most extraordinary travel experiences on Earth.’
