Why UHNW individuals choose private yacht charters over luxury resorts

Published 16 July 2026

When it comes to luxury holidays, high-end resorts and private villas have long been the go-to choice for travellers seeking comfort, privacy, and impeccable service. But expectations at the very top of the market are changing. Today’s ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) travellers are looking for more than a beautiful suite or secluded estate; they want freedom, discretion, personalisation, and meaningful time with the people closest to them. Increasingly, private yacht charters are emerging as the ultimate expression of that shift.

This change is being driven in part by the evolving profile of global wealth. UHNW individuals have traditionally been older, reflecting the time it takes to build substantial fortunes through business, investments, or inheritance. In recent decades, however, the financialisation and rapid digitalisation of the global economy have created new opportunities for younger entrepreneurs to accelerate their wealth. At the same time, substantial intergenerational wealth transfers are becoming more frequent are predicted to accelerate over the coming years. The result is a more diverse UHNW audience, with different expectations, values and ideas of what luxury looks like.

According to Altrata’s World Ultra Wealth Report 2026, the global UHNW population grew by 14.4 percent in 2025 to reach a record 556,850 individuals, each with net worth in excess of USD 30 million. Within this group, the number of centi-millionaires (those with net worth of more than USD 100 million) has also risen sharply, driven in large part by the technology boom. In 2025, there were more than 117,000 centi-millionaires worldwide, almost double the 60,000 recorded in 2015.

For this increasingly sophisticated audience, luxury is no longer defined by material display alone. Privacy, control, flexibility and access are becoming the true markers of an exceptional travel experience. A private yacht charter answers those needs in a way even the finest resort cannot: offering a fully personalised environment, a dedicated crew, total discretion and the freedom to wake up somewhere new every day.

EXCELLENCE

Privacy as the ultimate luxury

‘A yacht charter is like nothing else. Exclusivity, privacy… it is the ultimate way to spend time with family and friends, under the care of an exceptional crew, visiting the most beautiful places around the world.’ Craig Cohen, Charter Broker

Privacy remains one of the defining priorities for ultra-luxury travellers. According to the latest Virtuoso insights, more travellers seeking unspoiled destinations away from the crowds – a shift that speaks directly to the appeal of a private yacht charter.

While luxury villas and resorts can offer a high degree of privacy and security, a yacht takes this to new heights. Even in the finest hotel, the corridor between your suite and the spa is shared. In a villa, neighbouring properties, staff movements or nearby guests can still impact the experience. But on board a private yacht, the environment is entirely your own. The only people around you are your chosen guests and the highly trained crew dedicated exclusively to your needs.

This control over both guest list and setting is becoming increasingly important. Charter clients are looking for a private platform that allows them to relax, host, socialise and spend time with family without interruption. Yacht layouts are evolving in response, with secluded decks, private owner’s areas and flexible spaces that allow guests to come together or retreat into solitude within the same charter.

This benefit is especially clear in high-profile destinations such as Monaco and Ibiza, where privacy can be difficult to find on shore. Packed beach clubs, heavy traffic, long restaurant queues and crowded hotels are all part of the peak-season experience. With a yacht at your disposal, they become optional. Guests can step ashore when they choose, then return to the privacy, calm and control of their own floating retreat.

ENERGY

Total flexibility and freedom

One of the clearest advantages of a private yacht charter is the freedom to move. A luxury resort offers one setting, however spectacular. A yacht offers a new view every morning.

For UHNW travellers, this freedom is a major part of the appeal. A charter itinerary can be planned in advance but adapted at any point, allowing guests to linger longer in a favourite anchorage, change course with the weather, avoid crowded ports or add new experiences as the trip unfolds.

Burgess data shows that charter demand remains strongest in the traditional cruising grounds, with the West Mediterranean the most booked destination in 2025, followed by the Caribbean. Monaco, Capri, Porto Cervo and the Amalfi Coast continue to attract guests looking for the energy of the Mediterranean season, while growing interest in Asia and French Polynesia reflects a rising appetite for more adventurous, less travelled itineraries.

As charter broker Clara Lormant explains of St Vincent and the Grenadines: ‘Clients love that you can go from a completely unspoiled cay to a laid-back beach bar on Union Island within minutes.’ That ability to shift between places, moods and experiences is what makes charter so compelling.

The same flexibility extends to life on board and ashore. Broker Catherine Wilson explains: ‘I’m organising more add-ons than ever – guided hikes, expert-led big game fishing, live bands for evenings on board, reservations at hidden-gem restaurants, and private cultural tours. Chartering offers a fantastic platform for these kinds of immersive experiences because you can wake up somewhere new every day. And it’s our long-standing partnerships at Burgess that allow us to unlock these once-in-a-lifetime experiences.’

With a yacht, guests are not adapting to the rhythm of a hotel; the experience adapts around them.

Destination recommendations

With its rich history and amazing climate, Greece is a timeless cruising destination. Peak season is July and August, and with so many islands like Mykonos and beautiful coastlines to explore, a superyacht charter is the absolute best way to experience Greece.

The South Pacific islands of French Polynesia are a string of tropical jewels with an abundance of secluded anchorages and some of the most spectacular diving in the world. Tender ashore for mountain hikes with captivating views, visit vanilla plantations and pearl farms, or experience a traditional barbecue with fire dancers.

A fully personalised experience

For charterers, one of the most appealing aspects is the personalised service it provides. From the captain who navigates based on your chosen itinerary or how you feel on any given day, to the private chef who prepares extraordinary gastronomic experiences, tailored to your preferences and with locally sourced ingredients, every aspect of your journey is tailored to you.

Long before you arrive, your Burgess charter broker collaborates with the captain and crew to ensure everything is prepared to perfection. Once on board, that relationship continues, creating a seamless experience throughout your charter.

As broker Lotte Prentice notes: ‘Going the extra mile with thoughtful touches guests may not expect is always sure to impress – their favourite champagne chilled on arrival, gifts and handwritten notes in their cabin, a surprise birthday celebration organised by the crew, or a beautifully edited video of their trip presented on the final night.’

It is this combination of meticulous planning, dedicated service and thoughtful detail that elevates a yacht charter beyond even the most luxurious hotel stay – and why so many guests return to Burgess year after year.

‘From the impeccable, personalised service and engaging, intuitive crews to the endless watertoys, beautifully curated itineraries, and truly exceptional cuisine, a yacht charter surpasses even the most luxurious five-star hotel stays. That’s why we say it’s not just a vacation, and the yacht isn’t just accommodation; it’s a completely immersive, bespoke experience.’ Katie Schneidman, Charter Broker

Access to the inaccessible

For travellers looking to go beyond the obvious – from the icy wilderness of Antarctica to hidden anchorages in Croatia – a yacht can unlock places that hotels and villas simply cannot reach. While even the most luxurious resorts are fixed to one location, a yacht offers access to secluded beaches, remote bays and unspoiled islands that are often inaccessible by land.

This is where the world’s most exclusive addresses are not addresses at all, but coordinates. Snorkel in secret lagoons, dine barefoot on a beach set up just for you, or drop anchor far from the crowds in an otherwise popular cruising ground. With an experienced captain and crew who know the area intimately, even well-known destinations can reveal a quieter, more private side.

Antarctica kayaking

That sense of discovery is especially powerful on expedition-style charters. As Seonaid Thomas recalls of an Antarctica family trip: ‘It was truly unforgettable, with up-close wildlife encounters (orcas, penguins, humpback whales, seals), educational guidance from the expedition team, and immersive experiences like hiking on Desolation Island, visiting Port Lockroy, and stopping at the Vernadsky Research Base.

'The combination of awe-inspiring icebergs, wildlife, and the emotional, existential impact made it extraordinary. This week-long Antarctic adventure stands out because it required detailed planning for remote locations, ensured safety while allowing intimate wildlife encounters, and created a magical, once-in-a-lifetime experience for the whole family.’

Catherine Wilson gives another example from a Norway charter in March: ‘Thanks to the off-season dates, they had the fjords basically all to themselves for a feeling of true exploration and adventure.’

Explorer yachts take this even further, carrying the equipment needed to make the most of remote surroundings – from heli-pads for aerial access and heli-skiing to watertoys for exploring above and below the surface.

For those in pursuit of truly one-of-a-kind itineraries, our partnership with JORO ensures that your adventure is as seamless as it is exceptional. Combining our expertise in luxury yachting with JORO's mastery of bespoke travel, we create life-changing experiences that unlock the world’s most remote and extraordinary destinations.

The social and status element

For many owners and charter guests, a yacht is more than a way to travel – it's a private space designed for spending quality time with the people who matter most. Whether hosting a long lunch on deck, celebrating a milestone or enjoying a sunset cocktail, every moment is shared exclusively with your chosen guests, away from the crowds and cameras.

The experience extends far beyond the setting. Your crew can transform every evening into something memorable, from elegant tasting menus and beach barbecues to themed dinners inspired by your destination. Picture a Provençal feast beneath the stars after a day exploring the French Riviera, or a white party on the sun deck complete with bespoke cocktails, live music and every detail taken care of.

Few places embody this balance of privacy and prestige better than Saint-Tropez. By day, its legendary beach clubs, designer boutiques and waterfront cafes attract an international crowd, while the harbour becomes a showcase of some of the world's finest yachts. Return on board whenever you choose to swap the scene for complete privacy, before stepping ashore again when the mood takes you. Visit in July and August to experience Saint-Tropez at its liveliest, or enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere and warm Mediterranean weather in September.

LEMON TREE

Why resorts still play a role

Of course, hotels and resorts still have their place. For short-notice trips, brief stays or travellers who prefer to remain on land, a world-class resort can still offer an exceptional experience. They can also be the practical choice for very large groups that exceed the usual 12-guest capacity of a private yacht.

But for those seeking privacy, flexibility, personalised service and access to places beyond the reach of traditional hospitality, a yacht charter offers something fundamentally different. Resorts remain a valuable part of the luxury travel landscape; they simply serve a different kind of journey.

What this means for the future of luxury travel

It’s understandable, then, when looking at developments in the luxury travel space that many leading luxury hotel brands (think Six Senses, Orient Express and Aman) are moving into the nautical space. Launching their own take on yachts, these vessels bridge the gap between large-scale cruise ships and private superyachts, bringing elements of the yachting experience to a wider high-net-worth audience.

At the same time, the expectations that define private charter – personalisation, privacy, flexibility and access – are increasingly shaping hospitality more broadly. Luxury hotels and villa rentals are under growing pressure to offer more bespoke experiences, from tailored dining and private excursions to more flexible service models.

As younger generations build wealth through technology, entrepreneurship and inheritance, the priorities of luxury travellers will continue to evolve. For many, the emphasis is shifting away from static displays of luxury and towards immersive, experience-led travel. In that context, yacht charter is exceptionally well placed: it offers the privacy of a villa, the service of a five-star hotel and the freedom to wake up somewhere new every day.
