Andrew is a highly experienced lawyer with extensive superyacht, shipping, commercial and corporate law advisory experience. He also has expertise in the successful resolution of high value and complex yachting, shipping disputes and insurance claims. Andrew is Head of Claims & Associate General Counsel at Burgess and joined the company’s partnership scheme in 2024.

Prior to joining Burgess, Andrew qualified as a solicitor and barrister and practiced with leading international law firms in London and Sydney. Andrew represented clients on corporate and commercial transactions along with successfully handling high value superyacht and shipping disputes, commercial arbitrations and High Court litigation. He later moved in-house to an international marine insurer where he advised on a very broad range of commercial and corporate insurance agreements, shipping and superyacht operational terms, crew employment and yard contracts. In addition, Andrew was also responsible for the resolution of the company’s high profile superyacht arrest claims disputes and casualties.

Andrew joined Burgess as Head of Claims & Associate General Counsel in 2020 amidst the global pandemic. By virtue of his skillset, his role has evolved to include advising the wider Burgess business on corporate agreements and general legal risk, the Insurance Team on high value complex claims or recoveries and negotiating and drafting a wide range of commercial agreements for Yacht Management, Charter, New Build and Procurement.

‘I’m in a unique position in that I can really understand how the business works and how one small change across one department can affect the wider picture,' he says. As a pragmatic solutions-orientated commercial lawyer, he counts contract negotiation and dispute resolution as key strengths, alongside new business development. 'I like the thorny side of business, preserving and developing relationships, but also very much enjoy setting up new business platforms and ensuring all legal liabilities are covered so that the business hits the ground running and develops new income streams for Burgess.’

Andrew is a recognised speaker for Lloyd’s Maritime Academy and presented at numerous international conferences. As a keen sailor, he has raced in various offshore yacht races, including Sydney to Hobart.
