About Ed

Ed joined Burgess in 2013, taking up the role of naval architect and new build project manager before rising to become the company’s Head of New Build Sales, specialising in the development and negotiation of new build projects. Today, as Head of Semi-Custom Yachting, he has overall responsibility for all Burgess activity in the sub-500GT space – a sector he believes is entering a transformative phase.

‘The 30-50m sector is the fastest growing in the industry, and there’s still huge untapped potential,’ says Ed. ‘With the right professional support, owners can access an entirely new level of build quality, design, and operational efficiency.’

He was made Senior Partner in 2024, reflecting not only his depth of technical expertise but also his vision for Burgess’ future in this increasingly important part of the market.

Prior to joining Burgess, Ed spent five years at Lloyd’s Register, specialising in the fire and safety aspects of large yacht and passenger ship design. During that time, he played a role in the finalisation and implementation of the Passenger Yacht Code – experience that now underpins his nuanced understanding of build standards and regulatory frameworks.

‘I’ve always had a broad background that bridges operations and sales, technical detail and client focus,’ Ed explains. 'That combination gives me a real appreciation for what owners need – and how to deliver it.'

Ed’s work has seen him involved with a wide spectrum of yachts ranging from 30m up to well over 100m, including 110m JUBILEE, 74.5m ELANDESS, and 74m CLOUD 9. Beyond the yachts themselves, a large part of Ed’s role which he relishes is engaging with clients, shipyards, and designers all over the world.

Having grown up around the yachting industry, Ed is a keen sailor, a Chartered Engineer with RINA, and holds a first-class master’s in marine technology with honours in Naval Architecture from Newcastle University.

‘This next chapter at Burgess is about shaping the semi-custom space – making it more accessible, more professional, and more exciting for a new generation of owners.’
