On board AZIZA with Captain José
On board AZIZA with Captain José

Ahead of their summer cruising the Balearics, we spoke to AZIZA’s captain, José Luis Plaza, about his favourite hidden gems and how he and his crew are committed to making this your best ever charter.
Can you tell us a little about your background as a captain?
I have always felt a deep connection to the sea. My journey began from a scientific perspective: I studied oceanography and marine biology in the Canary Islands (1993–1998), combining my academic years with summer work as a diving instructor. While the sea had always been my passion, it wasn't until 1998 when I joined a whale-watching vessel as a scientific crew member that I truly discovered my vocation – I wanted to command a vessel and dedicate my life to navigation.
I began my career in yachting in 2000 and earned my first captaincy in 2005 aboard a Mangusta 108. I later had the privilege of overseeing the full build of two yachts: MATSU (ISA 120), where I served as captain for six years, and since 2013, my most personal and long-standing project, AZIZA (ISA 410).
AZIZA is not simply a yacht I command – she is a vessel I have seen come to life and evolve over more than a decade.
What do you enjoy most about charter operations and creating exceptional guest experiences?
The greatest reward in charter is witnessing guests experience something that exceeds their expectations. Seeing their reaction when discovering a hidden cove, enjoying a beautifully prepared dinner under the stars, or simply relaxing knowing every detail has been taken care of – that is what makes this profession so meaningful.
Our favourite phrase on board is: ‘This has been the best holiday of my life.’
When we hear that, we know we have done our job properly.
Can you tell us about AZIZA? What makes her unique?
AZIZA is truly distinctive. Beyond having a highly professional and intuitive crew, her design makes her stand out. When she was launched, several industry publications described her as a ‘mini megayacht’. The concept is simple yet brilliant: although she measures 41 metres, her layout prioritises volume and liveability.
The feeling on board – particularly in the master suite and the main living areas – is closer to that of a 55-60m yacht. She offers exceptional space, comfort, and privacy in a highly refined and manageable platform. She’s a truly unique prototype, designed for guests who value generous spaces and a true sense of freedom at sea.

How would you describe the crew culture on board, and how do you and the crew go above and beyond to create unforgettable moments for guests?
Our philosophy is to be present without being intrusive. We anticipate rather than react, ensuring that everything is ready before it is even requested. From table settings and interior detailing to watersports assistance and safety, every element is handled with precision and care.
What makes a charter truly exceptional is the synergy that develops between guests and crew. When guests feel genuinely cared for, and the crew feels that their effort is appreciated, something special happens. That is when we naturally go one step further – adding a thoughtful detail, a small surprise, a personalised touch.
Perfect charters are not accidental; they are crafted.
AZIZA will be cruising the Balearics this summer – can you share a few of your favourite hidden gems in this region?
If I revealed all my hidden gems, they would no longer be hidden! [laughs]
In truth, every group of guests is different. Some enjoy the vibrancy of beach clubs and renowned restaurants; others seek remote anchorages and untouched nature.
The beauty of the Balearics is that they offer both. And the further one moves away from the busy coastline, the more authentic and serene the experience becomes.
At the end of the day, you are on board a private yacht, surrounded by family and friends, enjoying bespoke service and exceptional cuisine – often surpassing what you would find ashore. That, in itself, is a luxury.
Another key advantage of the Balearics is their geography: regardless of weather conditions, there is almost always a sheltered coastline within comfortable cruising distance, ensuring both safety and comfort throughout the day.

If you could plan the perfect week-long itinerary in the Balearics this summer, what would it look like?
It always depends on the guests’ preferences, but for a week I often recommend a circular itinerary: exploring Mallorca and combining it with either Ibiza and Formentera to the south, or Menorca to the north.
That said, it is equally possible to dedicate an entire week to a single island, exploring two or three anchorages per day without excessive navigation, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in each location.
Adding one or two evenings ashore in historic town centres such as Palma or Ibiza, along with a lunch at a world-renowned beach club, creates a balanced and memorable experience blending nature, culture, and refined leisure.
What advice would you give to those considering their first charter?
My first recommendation is to work with a reputable broker and clearly communicate your expectations. A good broker understands both the yachts and their crews and will match you with the yacht best suited to your preferences.
Once on board, communication is key. The more you share about your tastes – from cuisine and atmosphere to activities and pace – the more precisely we can tailor the experience.
Unlike ownership, charter gives us only a short time to understand our guests. Information is invaluable. The more we know, the better we can exceed expectations.
Above all, do not hesitate to express what you truly want. We are here to adapt entirely to you, and to turn your week on board into something unforgettable.
