How Burgess helps you build a better yacht

Published 04 November 2026

Building a yacht is one of the most rewarding experiences in ownership, filled with the excitement of creation and the anticipation of delivery, but it’s also one of the most complex. From yacht construction management and design to the smallest interior detail, every detail has a lasting impact. With Burgess by your side, our yacht build management team makes every decision simpler, smarter, and shaped entirely around you.

Burgess has bought, sold, managed, chartered, crewed, insured, built and refitted hundreds of yachts, from 40–180m, working with shipyards and designers the world over. We know what works and what doesn’t. With New Build Sales on your side, all that learning and experience is built into your project. That’s how we help you build a better yacht.

Turning your vision into a clear yacht build brief

When beginning down the path of building a yacht, defining its purpose and usage is essential. Will this be a family yacht? Perhaps an explorer, or maybe a vessel purpose-built for the charter market to generate income? Once the intended use is established, you can then ask yourself what your size and style preferences are which, when taken with your defining purpose, can help your build manager create a solid build brief to present to shipyards.

Choosing the right shipyard for your yacht

With so many shipyards and types of yacht – from production to fully custom – knowing where to start can sometimes feel overwhelming. Drawing on deep technical knowledge, commercial insight and relationships with leading yards around the world, the Burgess New Build team helps owners identify the shipyard best placed to deliver their vision – with the right balance of quality, cost, timeline and risk.

Not all yacht shipyards are suited to every project. Understanding how they differ is key to finding the right partner for your build. They vary significantly in quality, pricing, delivery schedules, capacity and size limitations, making it essential to identify the factors that matter most to you before selecting the right build partner.

While choosing an established yard with a strong track record is often the lower-risk option, it can also mean higher costs and longer lead times. The right choice therefore depends on how the owner weighs quality, price, timeline and risk. As senior partner and naval architect Ed Beckett explains, 'our role is to understand each client’s priorities and discuss the strengths, trade-off and risks of each yard with complete transparency.'

How Burgess supports yacht design and technical development

Designing a yacht is about function first and looks second. Burgess brings together your chosen designers, the shipyard and our in-house technical specialists to help translate your vision into a yacht that works as beautifully as it looks. Building on your brief, we help align the layout, styling and engineering with how you intend to use your yacht, your design preferences and your performance priorities. This includes reviewing the General Arrangement (GA), which sets out the layout of guest cabins, crew areas and technical spaces, alongside the detailed build specification.

As the exterior and interior design develops, Burgess reviews the technical specification and performance expectations with the project team, helping you understand how choices about engines, range and materials support your plans. Your cruising grounds might call for an ice-class hull or greater range and autonomy, while a preference for faster passages will bring different performance priorities. By considering these requirements together, we help identify potential conflicts between the design and its technical demands before construction begins, when they can be addressed more readily.

Managing yacht construction, quality and project risks

Superyacht construction, while one of the most exciting parts of the process, is one of the most complex. It’s when your yacht begins to take physical shape beyond the drawings, involving architects, engineers, craftsmen and designers working in tandem. Effective yacht construction management is essential, and your owner’s representative is a vital piece of the puzzle.

At this stage, it’s all about ensuring your yacht isn’t just beautiful on paper, but that it’s safe, seaworthy and built to last.

How does Burgess' wider yachting expertise improve a new build?

At Burgess, our 360-degree offering brings practical ownership expertise into your new build, with specialists across yacht management, crew and charter working under one roof. Drawing on experience with similar vessels, our Management and Crew teams can advise on crew requirements, operational challenges and expected monthly running costs. Bringing this knowledge into the process early helps you understand the implications before committing to a build, while continuing input throughout construction helps shape a yacht that works for you in practice, not just on paper.

If you plan to charter your yacht, the Burgess Charter team can suggest options that will maximise its charter potential. While the project is focused through Brokerage and Technical Services, you have access to the expertise of the entire Burgess team to make sure you get the right product for what you want to do.

Once your yacht is delivered, Burgess continues to support every aspect of ownership, from warranty oversight and crew recruitment to charter strategy and refit planning. That continuity means the collective expertise that guided your build remains at your side throughout your ownership journey.

How does Burgess support yacht delivery and the transition to ownership?

Once the build of your yacht is complete, Burgess supports new yacht delivery from sea trials through to formal handover. During the yacht performance testing, your vessel is put to the test to check it performs as expected. Working alongside experts from across the build, our technical specialists help monitor the yacht’s systems and performance under real-world conditions, reviewing the results against the agreed specifications and technical documents. We help you understand the findings and work with the shipyard to address any outstanding issues before delivery.

Once sea trials are successfully completed, Burgess guides you through the superyacht handover process. Working with the shipyard and your advisers, we help coordinate the delivery documentation, including classification and flag certificates and inspection reports, in preparation for formal delivery. Ownership then officially transfers to you in accordance with the build contract. Our support can continue beyond handover, with yacht management, crew services and insurance expertise helping you make the transition from building your yacht to enjoying life on board.

Combining brokerage and technical expertise

CASE STUDY: BENETTI CLASS 44M 009

The sub-500GT market has been particularly buoyant, with the sale of a Benetti Class 44m (now FORTITUDE 1) a prime example of this. For senior broker and senior partner Rupert Nelson, the New Build Sales team was on hand to provide support during the sale process.

'Selling a large yacht is never easy; it takes time and requires the involvement of a team of professionals working closely together to get it across the line. This is even more the case with a new build project where the complexities of the build process during the period of construction require a much more in-depth knowledge of the yacht construction methods, especially when it comes to technical specifications, projected performance characteristics and quality control.'

FORTITUDE 1

'Having an in-house team at Burgess, the client and his sales broker were able to tap into a vast well of knowledge and experience of new build supervision from the industry's leading team of experts. This in-house knowledge reduces risk, improves the experience and ultimately delivers a superior product.

'Working together with Benetti on the purchase of their BENETTI CLASS 44M 009 was straightforward, uncomplicated and enjoyable – arguably the most essential ingredients for any client embarking on such an incredible journey.'

Finding the right shipyard for a bespoke brief

CASE STUDY: PROJECT ETESIAN

Naturally every owner wants something different, so finding the right designer and shipyard to make their project a success is different every time. The New Build Sales team understands exactly what each client’s requirements are and what pieces of the puzzle are needed to complete the picture.

'PROJECT ETESIAN is a great example of the necessity for this depth of knowledge,' senior broker and senior partner Peter Brown explains, 'as we needed to find a yard with two key attributes – both the ambition and the experience to build a true custom vessel under the 500GT threshold, which is more of a challenge than many might imagine. With so much growth in the semi-production series yacht marketplace it is increasingly hard to find an experienced shipyard that truly has the appetite to embark upon a bespoke project of this scale. Alia Yachts in Turkey is one such partner.

'Not only do they have a wealth of experience in custom yacht construction, but they pair it with an open and frankly refreshing mindset that embraces new ideas, new technology and new partners. On top of all this Alia provided the significant commercial upside in the Antalya Free Trade Zone that our client was looking for.'

Frequently asked questions
What does a yacht construction manager do?

A yacht construction manager, also known as a yacht owner’s representative, acts as an independent technical advocate for the buyer, overseeing the entire build process from design to delivery. Appointing an owner’s representative provides independent oversight to protect your investment.

Why work with a yacht construction specialist?

Working with a yacht construction specialist, whether that’s a naval architect, independent consultant, or dedicated project management firm, prevents costly delays, manages your budget and ensures the vessel meets your requirements.

When should you involve a yacht build specialist?

You should involve a build specialist or project manager before signing any contracts and while layouts and specifications are still evolving. Your specialist will manage the clients expectations and ensure the design is able to bring your designs to life, so this should happen before the contract has been signed as any changes afterwards can incur a cost from the shipyard.

How do you choose the right superyacht shipyard

Key factors to consider when deciding which superyacht builder and yacht construction yard to choose are:

  • Facilities
  • Logistics and ease of access including accessibility, roads, and airports
  • Premises
  • Flexibility during the building process
  • Structural organisation
  • Quality and price balance
  • Yard capacity

To explore in more detail, read our guide to choosing a shipyard here.

What is the difference between custom and semi-custom yacht construction?

A custom yacht is a fully bespoke superyacht, typically over 55m and completely customised to a client, with longer design and construction timelines. In comparison, a semi-custom yacht is a pre-designed vessel built by leading shipyards, usually under 50m (or 500GT) that offers the security of a proven platform with shorter lead times and more competitive pricing.

How long does it take to build a superyacht?

It takes an average of three to four years to build a fully custom superyacht. Boats built on speculation by a shipyard offer shorter delivery times, which is a great option for yacht owners who don’t want to wait. But for those keen on designing their own fully bespoke superyacht, the longer build time pays dividends.

How can a yacht build manager help control costs?

A yacht build manager helps control costs by establishing realistic budgets early in tandem with the shipyard and having construction oversight to ensure your project runs on time.

Who oversees quality during yacht construction?

Yacht construction quality control is overseen by a combination of the shipyard’s own teams, a client’s independent representative and external regulatory bodies.

What happens during yacht sea trials and delivery?

Every new vessel will go through yacht sea trials to test its performance. This is the first opportunity to find out if the finished boat can reach its contracted top speed, has great manoeuvrability, and for the yacht owner to make any final requests before final delivery.
