Italian shipyards: What’s new in the new build market

Published 11 juin 2026

Following the success of their tour around Turkish shipyards last year, our brokerage and new build teams headed out on an Italian adventure in May 2026.

For clients considering a new build yacht, understanding the quality, craftsmanship and character of each shipyard is essential. While brochures and specifications provide useful information, as each shipyard offers a distinct approach to design, performance and customisation, there is no substitute for our brokers visiting a shipyard in person. The trip also provided valuable access to off-market projects currently under construction and available for sale, giving our brokers insight into opportunities that may not be widely available on the market.

Over the course of the week, they visited some of the biggest names in Italian yacht building – from Benetti and Sanlorenzo to Riva and Overmarine – to strengthen relationships, familiarise themselves with the facilities, and to stay informed on the latest opportunities.

‘Walking through the facilities, inspecting yachts under construction and meeting the teams behind the projects gives us a deeper understanding of the product. This firsthand knowledge allows us to provide more informed advice and identify the right shipyard for a client's specific requirements.’ Skye McCulloch, New Build Sales Operations Manager

The Italian market

The most prolific new build country in the world, Italy accounts for over half of all global superyacht construction by number of yachts, according to Boat International’s Global Order Book 2026. Continuing their reign, Azimut-Benetti enters its 26th year as the world’s largest producer of superyachts, with Sanlorenzo following in second place.

The Italian yards are continuing to invest heavily in infrastructure, expanding their capacity to take on more projects and build on speculation – a signal that their position as the top superyacht builder is likely to remain unchanged.

According to the latest data, Italian yards have 568 projects currently in build – four less than last year – but an increase in the total length of construction on 2025 (22,299m in 2026), suggesting that the trend of building bigger isn’t going anywhere.

'Our recent successes with the deliveries of XWAVE, FORTITUDE1 and PAPER MOON underline why Italy remains such an important market. Together, these projects highlight the depth of expertise within the Italian shipyards and the breadth of choice available to clients across different sizes, styles and levels of customisation. For those entering the market today, Italy offers a compelling proposition: established builders, strong capacity and a pipeline of opportunities that continues to grow in scale and sophistication.'
